Mobies: A Customer Book for Small Businesses

Mobies, my customer book app for small businesses, wasn't planned. It grew out of Unutma, almost by accident, and then it insisted on becoming its own thing.

"Can I use this for my shop?"

After Unutma had been out for a while, a question kept coming up from people around me who run small businesses: can I use this for my customers? They wanted the same feeling — one private place on the phone, no account, no server somewhere holding their data — but for the shop rather than for themselves.

So the first version really was "Unutma for small businesses." Same bones, with a customer list bolted on. It worked, sort of. But the more I watched how a barber or a tailor actually uses their phone during the day, the clearer it became that this needed to be its own app, designed around the shop, not around me.

That became Mobies.

Who it's for: barbers, salons, tailors and repair shops

Mobies is for the small places: barbers, hair and beauty salons, tailors, repair shops, pet groomers, cafés, freelancers, and the kind of shop that doesn't fit any category. The ones where the owner knows most customers by face, and where "the system" has traditionally been a notebook by the register.

I didn't want to replace the notebook with something complicated. I wanted to replace it with a better notebook.

Not appointments. Customers.

There are plenty of booking and appointment apps. Mobies deliberately isn't one. The question a shopkeeper actually asks isn't "what's on my calendar at three?" It's: who came, who's late, who's due?

So the core of Mobies is the customer book, and the part I'm happiest with is what I call the visit rhythm. If a customer usually comes every three weeks and it's been five, Mobies notices and tells you. You see who's overdue, who's expected soon, and who you haven't seen in a while. Nothing clever, just the attention a good shopkeeper already pays, made visible.

Around that core:

  • Quotes, pro-forma and invoices, so a tailor or a repair shop can send a proper document straight from the phone.
  • Reminders via WhatsApp: a nudge to the customer who's due, sent through the app they already use.
  • Visit history and notes per customer, with fields that change depending on the kind of business.
  • A monthly view and simple order or preparation lists.

No account, data on your phone: the same promise as Unutma

Mobies works without an account. There is no server behind it; your customer data lives on your phone, encrypted. It works without internet, which matters more than people expect in a basement barbershop or a workshop with bad reception.

I'm careful how I say this: your data is on your phone, and you decide where any backup goes. There's no Mobies cloud quietly holding your customer list. And if you ever stop subscribing, your records stay readable, searchable and exportable. Your customers are yours.

Where it is now

Mobies has been on the App Store since July 2026 and gets regular updates. The visit rhythm, the monthly view, CSV import of old records and sector-specific customer fields are all recent. Next I'm working on making the first five minutes clearer, so a new shop owner sees the point without reading anything.
